PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

PMS refers to a group of symptoms related to the starting of your menstrual cycle. PMS can affect women of any age, and the number of symptoms and their severity is different for each person. Some may have no PMS whatsoever, some have symptoms that are just a monthly bother, and some have symptoms that are so debilitating they can hardly function. For those women, we encourage you to make an appointment to see one of our doctors, as there are several different treatment approaches we can use to ease your PMS symptoms.

Symptoms of PMS may appear one to two weeks before your period starts and often include those that are both physical and emotional:

  • Acne breakouts
  • Swollen or tender breasts
  • Feeling tired
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Upset stomach, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Headache or backache
  • Appetite changes or food cravings
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Trouble with concentration or memory
  • Tension, irritability, mood swings, or crying spells
  • Anxiety or depression

Symptoms and their severity will vary from woman to woman.

For those with symptoms not severe enough to see a doctor, there are some lifestyle changes that may help ease their discomfort:

  • Get regular exercise
  • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Avoid salt, sugary foods, caffeine, and alcohol, especially when you are having PMS symptoms
  • Try and get about eight hours of sleep a night
  • Find healthy ways to cope with stress, such as talking with a friend, exercising, journaling, doing yoga, getting a massage, or participating in relaxation therapy
  • Quit smoking

Over-the-counter pain relievers may also help to ease physical symptoms such as cramps, headaches, backaches, and breast tenderness.

If you try these remedies and you’re still not finding relief, call us for an appointment at 307-637-7700.
