Heavy Periods

One in four women experience unusually heavy menstrual periods every month, which are also known as menorrhagia. Not only are these heavy periods inconvenient, they can interfere with life’s regular activities. Many women begin to experience heavy and/or irregular bleeding in their 30s and 40s as they begin to get closer to menopause. If you’re in this category, you may find that your menstrual periods:

  • Last longer than seven days
  • Require frequent change of protection, or double protection
  • Cause tiredness, fatigue, or shortness of breath (which are symptoms of anemia)
  • Leave you with abdominal pain, severe cramps, or headaches
  • May cause you to miss social or athletic events, or even work

There are a number of different treatments for heavy periods, from hormone therapy to a complete hysterectomy to procedures such as Her Option® or NovaSure®. The suitability of each treatment depends on several different factors, including the cause of the bleeding, your specific symptoms, whether you desire to become pregnant in the future, and others. If you are experiencing heavy periods, please make an appointment to talk to us about your options. Call us at 307-637-7700.
